In the first game, Hitman: Codename 47, the Hitman codenamed "47", wakes up strapped to a sparse bed in a padded room, in hospital garb. A disembodied voice over a loudspeaker releases him and subjects him to a series of obstacle courses where he is instructed in firearms and murder techniques. 47 is eventually led to a pair of guards, whom he murders in order to escape captivity. The story then picks up a year later, rejoining 47 as a professional assassin in the employ of the International Contract Agency (ICA). 47 is sent around the globe on a series of missions to eliminate four global criminal masterminds, all while trying to unravel the secret behind his origin. In the second game, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, the game begins after the events of Hitman: Codename 47, as 47 seeks refuge in a monastery in Sicily. Attempting to put his murderous past behind him, he begins a new life as a simple church gardener, under the mentorship of Father Vittorio. However, Vittorio is soon kidnapped by the Mafia. Desperate to find his friend, 47 contacts the International Contract Agency (ICA), the agency which used to employ him, asking for assistance. Using spy satellites, Vittorio is tracked to the fortified mansion of Mafia Don Giuseppe Giulliani. 47 infiltrates the mansion in an attempt to rescue Vittorio and assassinates Giulliani in the process. However, 47 finds that Vittorio has been abducted, and his only clue is that the kidnappers are "four bearded Russian looking types in uniform". In return for their help, the Agency requests that 47 return to work for them; 47 agrees, and uses the money from the jobs to bankroll his search for Vittorio. As in the previous game, the hits form an overall pattern, as a single influential client sends 47 across the world on the trail of components for a Nuclear Weapons System. Hitman: Contracts, the third game, centers on a series of flashbacks Agent 47 experiences as a result of both his injuries and drugs he administers to counteract them. As he takes shelter in a hotel room, he slips in and out of consciousness, experiencing memories of previous contracts he has been hired for. Each mission is segued to be an action taken by 47 in his room, or by some element of his surroundings. For example, removing a painkiller needle from his thigh induces a flashback that opens with him removing a syringe from a man's neck. The forth game, Hitman: Blood Money, centres on assassinations carried out by Agent 47 (or, as he is referred to by the narrator, Mr. 47), as narrated in cutscenes by the former director of the FBI to a journalist invited to his home as they discuss 47. The ex-director recounts how his organization tracked 47 over a two-year period by observing his operations, each of which is played when it is mentioned in his story. The tone of the game, in complete contrast with the previous game, recalls elements of the 'world-traveller' grandeur of Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. Many of the new levels also contain strong sexual themes greatly exceeding that of previous titles in the series.
